Streaming entertainment is bigger than ever, and with so many streaming services adding new shows and movies every week, it can be nearly impossible to sort through the good and the bad. If you need something to watch and don’t want to wade through the digital muck that washes up on the internet’s shores, follow our picks below for the best new shows and movies to stream on Netflix, Hulu, HBO, Amazon, and other services.
On the list this week: A fresh take on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, a vicious crime drama, and a collection of fun-sized horror movies.
In its first season, Netflix’s Castlevania — an adaptation of the video game Castlevania III: Dracula’s Curse — established itself as the most metal animated series in years. The show was packed with grotesque creatures and gore-drenched action; one fight scene even featured the protagonist whipping a man’s eye out of its socket! Season 1’s biggest problem was that it ran a mere four episodes, totaling a little over 90 minutes. The second season finds vampire hunter Trevor Belmont (Richard Armitage) and sorceress Sypha Belnades (Alejandra Reynoso) continuing their quest to defeat Dracula (Graham McTavish), who is hell-bent on destroying humanity. Dracula is a mighty opponent, but Trevor and Sypha have help: The vampire’s half-human son, Alucard (James Callis), who wishes to stop his father’s wrath. Violent, action-packed, and even funny at times, Castlevania is a treat for fans of the games or anime in general.

British journalist/director Sacha Gervasi has led a wild life, meeting a variety of characters throughout his career. His latest film, My Dinner with Herv, dramatizes his experience profiling actor Herv Villechaize, a man with dwarfism who got famous through his roles on Fantasy Island and in the James Bond film The Man with the Golden Gun. Jamie Dornan stars as an alcoholic journalist trying to stay sober, who gets an assignment to profile Villechaize (Peter Dinklage). The two get off to a bumpy start, and over the course of their interview, they each probe the other’s past and flaws. My Dinner with Herv is a great showcase for its leads, particularly Dinklage.

Not since Oldboy has a film made an ordinary hammer look so terrifying! Lynne Ramsay’s thriller You Were Never Really Here is the tale of a man named Joe (Joaquin Phoenix), an ex-soldier who, when he’s not taking care of his elderly mother, works as a hit man. Joe’s latest assignment is a doozy: Someone has kidnapped the daughter of a New York state senator, who wants Joe to find and rescue her. As for the men responsible? “I want you to hurt them,” the senator says, and Joe is well-suited for that. You Were Never Really Here is a brutal crime drama, and throughout its lean run time (a little under an hour and a half), it maintains an almost constant tension.

In celebration of Halloween, Hulu has assembled a collection of short horror films under the banner “Huluween Film Fest,” and while they aren’t all great — a few of them are actually quite silly — the individuals films are short enough that you can binge them and still have time for a proper creature feature afterward. The plots vary: One follows a woman who watches an obscure dance video online, only to learn that the dance may harbor some strange power; another follows a snotty boy at a pizza parlor who gets a little too close to one of the animatronic animals. These fun-size films aren’t masterpieces, but they can be scary good fun.

The shocking Archie Comics renaissance continues with The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, a modern take on the iconic character Sabrina the Teenage Witch. It draws on the recent run of comics for a tale that is a lot darker than fans of the ‘90s series might be expecting. Set in the small town of Greendale, it follows Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka), a teenage girl who loves the normal things in life: Going to parties, hanging out with her friends, and conjuring dark energies from beyond. Sabrina is the daughter of a witch and a mortal, and she has inherited a penchant for magic. Her 16th birthday is approaching, however, and Sabrina will be forced to make a choice: Sign her soul away to the devil and live life as a witch, or refuse, and suffer the consequences. The show is a blend of creepy supernatural horror and high school high-jinks, a layered Halloween treat.
