The kinara is one of the symbols of the Kwanzaa holiday. It is a candelabra holding seven candles, recalling the seven principles of Kwanzaa.
A black candle is placed in the center, with three red candles on the left and three green candles on the right. The candles recall the colors of the African flag.
Each night, the black candle is lit first, and other candles are then lit to mark the principle of the day. On the seventh night, all seven candles are illuminated.
The menorah used in the Jewish celebration of Hanukkah can have a similar appearance, but it holds nine candles, not seven.
Kwanzaa is a week-long cultural festival that begins on Dec. 26. You can learn more about the meaning and symbols of Kwanzaa at the Official Kwanzaa Website.
