PAINTBRUSH COOKIES (makes about 4 dozen cookies)
1/2 c stick margarine or butter
1 c sugar
1 egg
¼ tsp baking soda
1 tsp baking powder
3 c flour
¼ c buttermilk
½ tsp vanilla
Beat together butter, sugar, and eggs. Mix together baking soda, powder, and ½ c of flour. Add to butter mixture. Pour in buttermilk and vanilla. Mix well. Slowly mix in rest of flour until dough is soft.
On a floured surface, knead dough until smooth. Chill dough in refrigerator for 15-20 minutes. (can be refrigerated overnight)
Roll out dough into ¼-inch thickness. Cut with cookie cutter. Decorate with paint before baking.
Once decorated, bake at 350° 8-10 minutes or until golden.
PAINT
1 egg yolk
½ tsp water (add more if needed to thin paint)
food coloring
Mix egg and water. Divide among small containers – tint with food coloring.
